Description
Various descriptions
The corpse of Rustam, popular hero of Persian legends (note 1), is said (note 2) to have been thrown into a well (a pre-Islamic sacrifice pit?) which VIGNE (1837: 777; 1840: 225) places at a distance of about 14 miles (22.5 km) on horse-back from Kabul (note 3): It is to be found near the southern end of the plain of Chahar Deh [note 4], in the direction of Logur or Logar, Lowgar, the province near N34°: E69° (±20'), about 50 km south of Kabul. The situation of the well, however, remains elusive: We contrived, however, not to find it, and returned to Kabul after a very fatiguingride; and as I was to depart in a day or two [21st October 1838], I did not make a second attempt (VIGNE 1840: 225-226).
