Description
A »circular hole, about 15 feet [5 m] in diameter and five feet [1.5 m] in depth« have been cut »below the falls« by »the stream falling at the head of the gorge at Stambagiriswami« (DUTT, N V B S 1955: 119). CAVE DESCRIPTION: This »circular hole« (DUTT 1955) could be a whirlpool or stilling basin (pool, well; in German: Tosbecken) at the base of a waterfall or, perhaps, an resurgence where a seasonal spring of water may rise from a hidden stream cave passage, of which the cave entrance is blocked by collapse debris. SITUATION: DUTT (1955) positions his »Stambagiriswami« roughly near N15°12': E77°57' (approximate horizontal precision error 1 minute = ±1.9 km; unspecified geodetic datum probably Everest 1830) and thus in an area where the Survey of India sheet 57-E/16 (edition 1977) does not show any Stambagiriswami but the devalam (temple) Khambagiriswami (note 1) high up on the plateau of the Owk Reserved Forest and at the very head of the straight east-north-east draining ravine of the Jakkuleru. About 200 m in a direct line due south from the buildings of the Khambagiriswami devalam, the »head of the gorge« (DUTT 1955) of the Jakkuleru (stream) is indicated on the Survey of India sheet 57-E/16 (edition 1977) as » + spring« near N15°12'03”: E78°57'15” (Everest 1830).
NOTE 1: There is an annual mela (religious fair, kirmes) in April at the devalam (Hindu temple) dedicated to Kambhagiriswami (N15°12'06”: E78°57'10”: 505 m asl Everest 1830). The Survey of India sheet 57-E/16 (edition 1977) shows two symbols for »lined well« (natural? man-made?) north and north-east of the buildings.
