Description
The fluted pothole cave entrance to Krem Jyllip, the cave of U Roher, is suspected to drop into a horizontal cave passage below. ETYMOLOGY: The word -jyllip- is not identified but the Khasi -jyllóp- (verb) means to wither and -jyllòp- (adverb) by drowning while -u jyllop- (noun) is the name of a kind of bird who cheers the valley with his song (SINGH, N 1906: 106). SITUATION: At an unspecified location somewhere in the vicinity of the road from Mawlong (N25°32'50”: E091°38'13” WGS84 on the road from Sohra / Cherrapunjee) to Ishamati (N25°09'55”: E091°41'20” WGS84). APPROACH: To reach the cave, drive downhill from Mawkhlien or Mawkhlain (note 1), which is a place where everybody knows about this cave associated with U Roher, and continue for a short distance to a bifurcation at a locality (hamlet?) called Rijyrkha (note 2). From here, one has to walk a kilometre to the cave. CULTURAL HISTORY - Human use & corpse disposal: The murder of U Roher would not have been detected had nt the fetters, with which his body had been tied, got entangled with some protrusion in the pothole's wall when his body was thrown down (Brian D. Kharpran Daly 2002.03.23 personal communication).t the fetters, with which his body had been tied, got entangled with some protrusion in the pothole's wall when his body was thrown down (Brian D.
