Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 02/04/2016

A unidentified but apparently locally known karst spring near »Kommoroh« (note 1) is said (Kharpran Daly 1995 personal communication) to drain waters which have disappeared into an unidentified cave (no name known) at a place called –>Nongbah near the village of Wahlong (N25°12'29”: E091°43'25” WGS84). IDENTITY: This spring of water (exsurgence or resurgence) is possibly the same as the cave simply called –>Bogda, Shella - Bholaganj (note 2). ETYMOLOGY: The word "komora" seems to designate a (stone) quarry as the adjective "kom" means »less, defective« (SINGH, N 1906: 45) and the Khasi verb "or" is a simple form of "orpait" and means »to crack, to break into chinks« (SINGH, N 1906: 147). On the other hand, the Khasi loanword "u kamar" from Bengali (where the ending -a indicates a plural) signifies »a blacksmith« (SINGH, N 1906: 21).

NOTE 1: »Komorroh« (Kharpran Daly 1996.03.17), Komora, Komorah (or so) is not shown on the Survey of India sheet 78-O/12 (edition 1912, 1937) but Colin Rogers (2001.03.21 personal communication) had came across a »Komora Limestone Mining Company« (KLMC) with a quarry near N25°10'35”: E091°44'10” (WGS84) in the valley of an Arli River, a tributary to the Shenab. NOTE 2: The cave simply called »Bogda« has been sort of GPS positioned (unspecified geodetic datum, ignored precision error) at N25°10'39.2”: E091°43'57.5” (modified from N25°10.653": E091°43.959" interpreted as »N25°10'65.3": E091°43'95.9"« Colin Rogers 2001.03.11, Garmin 12).
