Description
… Lumshlan entrance. From here we surveyed a section of fine passage bypassing the Putrid Pool (see later) which Tom followed through a low, wet section to another entrance: Krem –>Lumshlan 2. After leaving a couple of bottles of Royal Challenge beer to cool in the stream we followed the inlet stream, surveying as we went. It was soon obvious to Tom that this was the streamway we had surveyed yesterday and I quickly confirmed that it also had been surveyed by myself and Tom last year. The unpleasant main –>Soh Pang Bniat stream duck was in fact the Putrid Pool at the end of –>Rong Umso. We then decided to survey the first dry inlet on the left going upstream. This soon revealed itself to be the previously unsurveyed White Woodlice Way so we corrected this fact and also surveyed some of the larger bat roost passages above. By doing this we disturbed thousands of circa 3- body length [7.5 cm] black bats [Chiroptera, indet.] which dive bombed us and spread their assorted body waste and prasites through the air -- lovely. We soon ran out of time [or, more likely: ethanol] and followed this lead for another possible 100 m or so to emerge near the old wooden ladder upstream from Krem Lumshlan 1 (Jarratt 1999 Mss -Cave Log, vol. 7- 1999.02.24). ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for what has been christened after the name of an unidentified lum (Khasi) or hill. Jarratt was led to believe the -shlan- means small bamboo (Jarratt 1998.02.16 Mss: Cave Log 1998: 16/2/98). This is not the case (note 1).rasites through the air -- lovely.
