A man-made stepwell or well with flights of steps descending to the water (SMITH, G 1882: 296) and fine baoli (LONELY PLANET, India 1990: 499; 1993: 648; 1997: 707; 2001: 640; 2003: 654) with underground chamber (BROSSET, A 1962a: 11). ETYMOLOGY: SMITH, G (1882) translates -Naulakhi Baori- as Nine Lakhs Well (£90,000) (note 1). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1882: Baroda … Near the city is the Naulakhi Baori or Nine Lakhs Well (£90,000), now the chief sight of the place, -with grand flights of steps descending to the water through rows f stone pillars and pilasters,- as described by James Forbes a century ago (SMITH, G 1882: 296).CAVE LIFE - bats (Chiroptera): BROSSET, A (1961: 436) observed a colony of the Fulveous fruit bat (Pteropidae: Rousettus leschenaulti Desmarest 1820) in one of the puits de Gujerat (stepwells of Gujarat) near the Maharaja's palace at Baroda: Un autre colonie, moins importante, habite également un puits gujerati proche du palais du Maharadja de Baroda.
