Description
IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 22: 58), usually written in a dry matter of fact style, provides a decription of the »Sankaridrug hill« close to lyrics: »The hill is well worth climbing. Past a Hindu temple … the traveller toils up a flight of steep steps, and half-way up reaches a snowy mosque … which nestles among the green foliage that clothes the hill like a pearl set among emeralds. Leaving this the path winds among remains of fortifications and the houses of the garrison, now overgrown with shrubs and prickly pear, and at length reaches a plateau at the top of the hill [at a height of 710 m asl]. Here is a fount of pure cold water [note 1], supposed to be possessed of medical virtues; and the remains of an old Hindu fort, its granary [storage] and the subterranean cell [dungeon] into which condemned prisoners where thrown, come into view. Crowning all are the temples of Vishnu, the lights of which twinkle in the evenings in the surrounding darkness. The village is healthy, and was a favourite camping place for the District officers till Yarcaud rose into prominence. The public bungalow, one of the finest in the district, is picturesquely situated on a rock just under the hill.«
NOTE 1: On 16th January 2002 I missed the »fount of pure cold water« but came across a stagnant pool of a dark green coloured "fluid" resembling an algae jelly decorated with discarded rubbish and semi-floating plastic bags in various degrees of decomposition. Seen through the lense of gentlemen with a taste for suicide, however, the »medical virtues« of these waters seemed rather antisalvatoric than promortal but I must admit having avoided to test the effects of this liquid.
