Description
Unspecified »rock shelters and caverns« (NARASIMHAIA, B 1980: 80) or »rock shelters and caves« (GOSH, A 1989, vol. 2) near Paiyampalli are of archaeological interest and probably occur — but this is mere guesswork — among gravitationally dislocated granite boulders where the districts of Krishnagiri and Vellore meet and thus in an area of the –>Mallappadi Shelters. SITUATION: In Tiruppattur taluk at a place »8 km east of Bargur [note 1] and 10 km west of Nattarampalli [note 2], almost midway [on NH 46] between Bangalore and Madras, at the foot of the hill Talatapamalaii, the archaeologial site Paiyampalli [note 3] was excavated by S.R. Rao (IAR 1964-5, 1967-8) and yielded neolithic to early historic deposits, mostly from open air sites but also from a few rock shelters and caves« (GOSH, A 1989, vol. 2: Paiyampalli). CULTURAL HISTORY - archaeology: »The neolithic people of Tamil Nadu … did not live in the rock shelters and caverns … because there is no cultural debris in them. However, one can infer from evidence of the pottery and some tools collected from caverns that they used them as temporary shelters« (NARASIMHAIA, B 1980: 80). POSSEHL (1988: 190) lists eight »Paiyampalli« radiocarbon dates.
NOTE 1: Bargur (also: Barguru) N12°33': E078°22' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 10: 363) lists no »Bargur« except a »breed of cattle in Coimbatore« but both the Survey of India sheet Kerala, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu (1 : 1 mill. State Map series, 1980 edition) and the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 112 C4) show a populated place called Bargur near N12°33': E078°22' (Everest 1830) and some 18 km east of Krishnagiri. NOTE 2: Nattarampalli N12°35': E078°31' on AMS sheet ND44-13 Bangalore (1959 edition) is too small to be shown on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 112 C4). NOTE 3: Paiyampalli is neither shown on AMS sheet ND44-13 Bangalore (1959 edition) nor on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 112 C4) but there is a hill »2513 feet« (766 m asl) at proper distances (8 km east of Bargur and10 km west of Nattarampalli) on the left (northern) side of the road from Krishnagiri (12°32'N: 78°14'E) to Vaniyambadi (N12°41': E078°37').
