The noise of flowing water issues from gaps between dislocated boulders without apparent access to what is possibly a yet inaccessible stream cave. Compare Krem –>Shymbrong. ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi word "symptung" (Vivian 'Bibi' Kharnaior, 1998.11.03 personal communication) is not identified (note 1). SITUATION: On the road from Pynursla (25°18'30”N: 92°54'E) to Dauki (25°11'10”N: 92°01'20”E), on the south side of a hill, which has been marked (November 1998) with a limestone quarry, and about 365 m in a direct line approximately west of Krem –>Shymbrong (25°14'45”N: 91°57'26”E. The cave entrance to Krem Symptung has been GPS positioned near (±25 m) 25°14'44”N: 91°57'13”E and thus at a spot which lies 750 m in a direct line approximately south (742 m south, 112 m east) of the village of Pongtung (25°15'08”N: 91°57'09”E.
NOTE 1: The standard Khasi "u sim-tung" (noun) is the name for a »a blackbird« (SINGH, N 1906: 204; 1920: 47) and "ka 'tung" (noun), a contraction of ”ka ktung”, means not only »the vetch« but also »a kind of small preserved fish« (SINGH, N 1906: 236).
