Description
»Between Ghamsali [note 1]and Niti [N30°47': E079°49'], we come across a cave with a roof eight metres high. The cave [or rock shelter, temple cave] contains an autogenous lingam which is about 80 centimetres tall. A big fair is held here on Janmashtami« (SHARMA 1994: 94, 137). Since BATTEN (1838: 313) reports from Niti »limestone (not crystalline) and argilaceous schist, chiefly the latter« the »autogenous« (SHARMA 1994) or "swayambhu" (self-arisen) lingam may consist of a venerated stalagmite (speleothem) or simply of an erected elongated rock.
NOTE 1: »Ghamshali« (MOORCROFT 1815), »Ghamsali« (PRANAVANANDA 1949: 152), or »Gamsali« N30°45': E079°50' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) is the »Gamsal« (the confluence of the Gamril Ganga and the Dhauliganga / Dhauli Ganga) shown on AMS sheet NH44-06 Nanda Devi (U502 series, 1958 edition). PRANAVANANDA (1949: 152) places »Gamshali« at 3147 m asl and a distance of 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from Niti.
