Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 12/12/2015

A modified natural temple cave sacred to Shiva contains stalactites and stalagmites (lingam speleothems) (note 1). SITUATION: Unknown -- somewhere at Jaintiapur (note 2), the former winter capital of the Jaintia Syiems (kings), now in Bangladesh, Sylhet subdivision. GEOLOGY 1851-1852: »In this portion of the range [Meghalaya], the hills rise very suddenly and abruptly from the plains. At a short distance from their base, and stretching along nearly parallel to the great range, though with interruptions, is a broken series of small rounded hillocks, often beautifully wooded. These rise from 1 to 200 feet above the general level of the plains, and are composed of layers of sand, clay and gravel, very irregularly disposed, and often highly indurated by a ferrugineous cement« (OLDHAM, T 1859: 103-104). CULTURAL HISTORY: Hindu pilgrims visit the cult spot during Shivaratri festival (note 3). Keywords: Mela, yatra.
