GEOLOGY 1851-1852: »In this portion of the range [Meghalaya], the hills rise very suddenly and abruptly from the plains. At a short distance from their base, and stretching along nearly parallel to the great range, though with interruptions, is a broken series of small rounded hillocks, often beautifully wooded. These rise from 1 to 200 feet above the general level of the plains, and are composed of layers of sand, clay and gravel, very irregularly disposed, and often highly indurated by a ferrugineous cement« (OLDHAM, T 1859: 103-104).
