Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 01/05/2016

A relatively »small cave which has been lined with white marble slabs« (GANHAR s.a., circa 1973) is sacred to Hindus and consists of a modified natural temple cave (note 1), which contains not only a naturally formed Shiva lingam (stalagmite speleothem) but also gives access to an uncounted number of fabulous tunnels connecting to distant shrines at unspecified places »which are even located outside India« (thebharat.com accessed 2002.11.09). ETYMOLOGY: »Pir Khuh« (GANHAR s.a., circa 1973) or »Peer Khoh« (thebhrat.com; reckonindia.com) means Cave of [the Muslim] Saint.SITUATION: At Panchvaktar mandir, a temple that lies a travelling distance of 3.5 km from the centre of Jammu town, close to the circular road, and a little above the bed of Tawi River. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1973: »Pir Khuh …The lingam is placed inside a small cave which has been lined with white marble slabs … According to some people it was erected by Raja Ajaib Dev in the 15th century A.D.« (GANHAR s.a., circa 1973: 62, 118). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2002: »Peer Khoh - This cave shrine … is dedicated to Shiva and a naturally formed Shivaling is worshipped here. The antiquity of this lingam is not known. Peer Khoh is situated near the circular road. It is said that this cave gives way to other underground caves [note 2] and shrines, some of which are even located outside India« (thebharat.com/states/jammuandkashmir/html/jammu accessed 2002.11.09). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2006: »Peer Khoh - This cave shrine is located 3.5 kms from Jammu town. This shrine is dedicated to Shiva and a naturally formed Shivaling is worshipped here. It is said that this cave gives way to other underground caves and shrines, some of which are even located outside India« (reckonindia.com/tourism/hill_stations_of_india.asp accessed 2006.06.29).

NOTE 1: This temple cave is possibly identical with –>AA Cave (Jammu) or the Cave of –>Shiva (Jammu). NOTE 2: Warning: Without practising severe austerities, e.g. refraining from common sense, such »underground caves« are easily confused with caves suspended in the air.
