Description
Almost inaccessible caves (SHAKESPEAR 1929: 151) were used as hide-outs by the people of Khonoma high up in great masses of Japvo appear to correspond to those cozy natural caves and rock overhangs, ideal for camping (note 1), which are advertised in tourist information booklets (note 2) and on Intenet websites (note 3) from the Dzukou valley (note 4). SITUATION 1929: To the south [of Khonoma N25°39': E094°02'] and overlooking it rise the great masses of -Japvo- [peak N25°36': E094°06'] and -Kahoo- [note 5], both densly forested, the former being nearly 10,000 feet [3048 m] above sea level. Some 2000 feet [610 m above Khonoma] higher up into these hills the enemy had built further defences … while still higher up they had sheltered their women and children in almost inaccessible caves (SHAKESPEAR 1929: 151 edited 1980: 151). SITUATION 2002: At an elevation of 2438 meters above sea level behind [south and south-west of] the Japfu peak [note 6]. It is 30 kms to the South of Kohia [N25°40': E094°07']. The entire valley is covered with a type of tough bamboo brush and it gives the place an appearance of a mown lawn. During winters the temperatures here goes sub-zero causing the stream flowing through it to freeze. In summers along the river banks wild herbs sprout along with a variety of other flora. From June to September the entire valley is a carpet of flowers. There are natural beds of white and yellow lilies, the aconitum, the euphorbia and hundreds of other species of flowers in varied colors. The hills surrounding the valley have trees of Rhododendrons in white and other colors. The numerous low cluster of hillocks surrounding the valley contain some cozy natural caves and rock overhangs, ideal for camping. This is one of the best trekking spots in the North Eastern region (DESTINATION KOHIMA, s.a. circa 2002). SITUATION 2007: Dzüoküo Valley, otherwise called the valley of eternal charm has an irresistible appeal to all who behold it. It is tucked aay at an altitude of 2438.4 m [read: approximately 8000 feet] behind the Japfü ranges. It is about 30 km south of Kohima. Dzüoküo is known for its biodiversity, Rhododendrons in different colors ornaments the Hills surrounding the valley (nagarealm.com accessed 2007.12.12).a [N25°40': E094°07'].
