Description
The »Buddhist caves« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 10: 185) at Chaul represent man-made, rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes. SITUATION (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 10: 184, 185): In »the south and south-west faces of the neighbouring hills« of the town of Chaul (note 1) on the Konkan Coast) »about 30 miles« (48 km) »south of Bombay« (saffronised Mumbai), and »on the right bank of the Kundalika river or Roha creek« (note 2).
NOTE 1: Chaul N18°34': E72°55' (Everest 1830, IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 10: 184) or Chaul (ruins) N18°33'56”: E72°55'56” (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003), and Chaul Knob N18°31': E72°56' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). Chaul is not shown in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 90 A3) a little north of Revadanda N18°33'1”: E72°55'40” (WGS84) and about 15 or 20 km south of Alibag / Alibagh N18°38'28”: E72°52'45” (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003).
