LURI (Troglodyte settlement of)

A cluster of about six (note 1) man-made rock chambers, including the famous painted –>Luri Cave (note 2), is excavated from the conglomerate at Lori / Luri (note 3). Compare –>Kakom Cave and –>Tashi Kabum or –>Tashi Gelling. SITUATION 1993 (GUTSCHOW 1993) … XXX to be added SITUATION 2000: At a distance of a few hours walk above Yara. To reach the site, the standard route to Luri is via a trail through Gara village, on the ridgeline to the north above Yara (McCUE 2000). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1968: A … hermitage belonging to a monastery and consisting of cave dwellings. Having visited several subterrean chapels, which we reached with the help of wooden ladders [note 4], we were guided to a vast cavern where a large chorten, covered with miniature frescoes, did rise (PEISSEL 1968b: 230).CAVE DESCRIPTION 1994a (NEUMANN 1994) XXX to be added CAVE DESCRIPTION 1994b: A similar situation [like the one of –>De Jhong Phug] we found in the next confluent valley to the north at the site of Luri. Ther we can envisage how access to the cave-systems was provided during the time of its use. Nowadays this monument is much threatened by the many tourist groups who climb up there in order to see the ancient, beautifully painted chörten built in one of the upper cave chambers (SIMONS, SCHÖN & SHRESTA 1994a: 2).CAVE DESCRIPTION 2004: XXX to be added (McCUE 2000).
