Description
A rock shelter containing rock art (painting). ETYMOLOGY: »Bhana Boi Shelter« (KUSCH 1996: 15) is misprinted »Dhana Boi- Rockshelter« (KUSCH 2003: 105). SITUATION (KUSCH 1996: 15): At the side of a jeepable road in Sateri National Park, about 10 km along the road north-west of –>Pachmarhi () and close to »Meilenstein 14« (literally "milestone" 14 but possibly kilometre 14) on the way to –>Sateri Cave. APPROACH: To reach the site officially (note 1), KUSCH (2003: 105) recommends to travel for about 7 km from an unspecified point at Pachmarhi along the metalled road (approximately north and downhill) towards Matkuli (note 2) and up to a checkpoint (note 3). Leave the metalled road (towards west? on the left-hand side) for a »jungle path« (a jeepable fair weather road) towards the village of Barkachar (note 4): »The cave itself lies in one of the south-north trending valleys south-west of this village and probably in one of the gorges south-east of the height 1108 m« (note 5).
NOTE 1: An informal option (cheaper and sustaining local resources instead of implemented officers) is being lead by a knowledgeable guide along a walk where one looses and gains some 700 to 800 vertical metres in the course of a 10 to 12 km hike (there and back again) from Pachmarhi to the shelter. An overnight stay is recommended. NOTE 2: Matkuli N22°36': E078°27' (Everest 1830) lies 22 km along the road from Pachmarhi. NOTE 3: This checkpoint (no name known) lies probably on the left (western) side of the road from Pachmarhi to Matkuli and, perhaps, near N22°00'30": E078°27' (Everest 1830, Survey of India sheet 55-J/06). NOTE 4: The wide-spread village of Barkachar is shown near N22°30'15": E078°24'30": 990 m asl (Everest 1830, Survey of India sheets 55-J/06 and 55-J/07) and lies at a distance of about 6 km on foot from Pachmarhi via the Jambudip Pahar (circa 1100 m asl). Local informants are believed to have spelled Barkachar as "Watkaschar" (KUSCH 1996: 15) or "Wat Kaschar" (KUSCH 2003: 105) though English speakers use "sh" for the German "sch": »Was den Ort Watkaschar betrifft, so hatte ich den Namen bei den Einheimischen im Ort selbst erfragt und mir aufschreiben lassen. Da kann es schon vorkommen, dass der offizielle Namen anders lautet [Heinrich Kusch 2004.04.18 personal correspondence].« NOTE 5: »Was nun den Ort betrifft den ich in der Höhle [Die Höhle 2003, 54.4: 105] als Wat Kaschar bezeichnet habe, so hast Du recht, es ist jener Ort, der in Deiner Karte [Survey of India sheet 55-J/7 edition 1976] mit Barkachhar bezeichnet wird und die Höhle liegt in einem der vielen von Nord nach Süd verlaufenden Tälern die südwestlich dieses Ortes zu finden sind. Es dürfte einer der Gräben sein die südöstlich der Höhenkote 1.108 m liegen« (Heinrich Kusch 2004.10.20 personal correspondence).
