Description
A relatively »small cave [man-made rock chamber] with a verandah, probably the work of Jain ascetics« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 10: 181). SITUATION: On the west side of Chatia, the hill (note 1) »in the Jajapur subdivision … on the trunk road near the village of the same name« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 10: 181). The hill is indicated as »601« (183.2 m asl) on AMS sheet NF45-14 Cuttak (U502 series, 1959) at a travelling distance of »11 miles« (17.7 km) north-east of Cuttack (N20°30': E85°50') and north-west side of the National Highway NH5 in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 89 G2).
NOTE 1: »On the east side of the hill are the ruins of a fort called Amravati. The walls are made from laterite and are quadrangular, with one gate facing east. The zanana rooms are indicated by a high platform with broken pillars, and on a smaller platform stood a temple, now fallen. On one of the platforms are two well-carved life-size images of Indra and his wife Indrani. According to local tradition. Amravati was one of the five Katakas or forts of the Kesari dynasty« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 10: 181).
