BAM SNIANG (Krem)
25.257700,92.473600
Description
An entrance without identified orientation or dimensions leads to a possibly abandoned (relic) flood resurgence, as the flood channel (note 1) is well overgrown. Estimated to be about 60 m long (without orientation) and 25 m deep (Dowswell 2000.02.22 Mss: Krem Bam Sniang). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi -Krem Bam Sniang- translates into -Cave Eat Pig- -- once chasing a pig, it disappeared here. SITUATION (note 2): Take a path from the abandoned miners' camp (note 3) downhill past water supply and up the first small valley, over ridge and down to large riverbed, dry in February 2000. Continue up next ridge to a point (without position) about halfway up in mature trees and take dry gully to left. After about 100 m a pronounced cliff face, about 15 m high, is met. The cave entrance is at the base of the cliff to the right hand side. CAVE DESCRIPTION: Climbing down through boulders to the left hand side of the cliff face a large breakdown chamber is reached with a gradient around 30° down to its owest point. At this point the flat roof is about 20 m above the floor. The way on is down through a boulder choke at the lowest point which reaches, after a succession of four 1.5 m drops, a low meandering bedding plane passage about 0.4 m in height. CAVE CONTENTS: Large breakdown with muddy deposits. CAVE POTENTIAL: The passage continues though there was little movement of air (current, draught). The main entrance chamber has various other small chambers at odd corners but all are blind.owest point. At this point the flat roof is about 20 m above the floor. EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2000.02.22: Guided by an unidentified guide called Wiseman (or so) it was an unspecified camp cook in company with Peter N. F. Dowswell, Fraser E. Simpson and Neil Sootinck, who visited and entered, penetrated part of the cave and happily returned to the surface. The first crawl crawl encountered was not pushed due to lack of draught (air flow, air current).
