Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 05/07/2016

On a tour along the –>Kishanganga (Kishan Ganga) Major N.N. Thomas (note 1) came across an unspecified cave (item no. II) situated »opposite the Fort at Quarais« (note 2), which lies about 50 km in a direct line north-northeast of Srinagar. This cave is possibly developed in Upper Triassic Gurais Limestone (THAKUR 1992: 208-209) or in Permian or Triassic basalt of tuff (note 3).

NOTE 1: Thomas, [Major] N.N. in: Glennie, Edward Aubrey (not dated): Appendix B: Kashmir State.- (typescript draft held by the BCRA (British Cave Research Association) Library, Matlock, Derbyshire, England [provided by Ray Mansfield]. NOTE 2: »Quarais« (Major N.N. Thomas in Glennie (s.a.): Appendix B: Kashmir State) or Gurais N34°38': E074°50' (nima.mil/geonames/India, accessed 16.11.2003) is not shown on AMS sheet NI43-06 Srinagar (U502 series, 1959 edition) but in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 2 B2 in Baramula district. NOTE 3: SINGH (1995: 352): »During the Carboniferous period, the Kashmir area was converted from a region of quiet marine sedimentation to a great theatre of vulcanicity. The vulcanic products buried large areas of Kashmir under a 2,100 to 2,400 m thick blanket of lavas and tuffs. The volcanic activity was most intense during the Permian period after which it diminished. At isolated centres, as in Gurais, it persisted till Upper Triassic.«
