Description
A »cave« or rock shelter of the »Robertsganj group« (note 1), which contains paintings (rock art) depicting a rhinocerus hunting scene (note 2), has been recorded under the titles »Temple Mound Cave, village of Roump« (COCKBURN 1883b: 125) and »Roup shelter« (SHARMA 1966 in: IAR 1956-7: 13-14). SITUATION 1883: COCKBURN (1883c: 59 places his »Temple Mound Cave« about »400 yards« (365.76 m or so) south of the camping ground at the village of »Roump« (note 3).SITUATION 1855: HOOKER, Joseph Dalton (1855 / 1980, 1: 54) indicates on the map accompanying his Himalayan Journals (1854-1855 edited 1857, 1891 edited 1969, 1974, 1980 vol. 1: 60) the village »Roup« at an elevation of »1090 feet« (335 m) in the »Pergunnah« (pergana) called »Burhur« (note 4). CULTURAL HISTORY - rock art: COCKBURN (1883c: 59: »… three man attacking a boar whose tusk is planted on the tip of his nose …«) reports to have seen his first cave painting of a rhinocerus hunting scene in a rock shelter. SHARMA (1966, in: IAR 1956-7: 13-14, plate 7) confirms the »Roup shelter« was one visited by Cockburn.
NOTE 1: All caves or rock shelters of the »Robertsganj group« are situated within a radius of »three miles« (4.8 km) from the town of Robertsganj (PTO near N24°41'10”: E083°03'45” Everest 1830) on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: G1) in Sonbhadra district. NOTE 2: The three famous rock art sites in Uttar Pradesh showing rhinocerus (or so) are »Jagdaha Cave« (rock shelter near Ghormangur ±250 m N24°36'45”: E083°13'40”, about 84 km in a direct line SSE of Varanasi / Benares 25°20'N: 83°00'E), Harni Harna (±2.5 km N24°35': E083°12' about 86 km in a direct line SSE of Benares), and Roup Shelter = Temple Mound Cave (Roump village, ±2.5 km N24°39': E083°05'), about 77 km in a direct line east by south of Benares (25°20'N: 83°00'E). NOTE 3: »Roump« (COCKBURN 1883b: 125) or »Roup« (HOOKER 1855 / 1980, 1: 54; SHARMA 1966) is is indicated as »Raump« near N24°39': E083°05' (Everest 1830): 320 m asl on the Survey of India sheet 63-P/02 (1: 50,000 series, 1971 edition) at a distance of about 4 km in a direct line south-southwest of Robertsganj (PTO near N24°41'10”: E083°03'45” Everest 1830) on the Survey of India sheet 63-P/01 (1: 50,000 series, 1971 edition). NOTE 4: There are two neighbouring villages of »Burhar Kurd« (N24°43'45”: E083°03'00”) and »Burhar Kalan« (N24°43'15”: E083°03'05”) shown 5 km in a direct line north-northwest from Robertsganj (PTO near N24°41'10”: E083°03'45” Everest 1830).
