LUM LAWBAH CAVE 5 (aa -)
25.259800,91.725800
Description
A pair NNE-facing cave entrances (one 10 m wide and 3 m high, the other 11 m wide and 1 m high), which are only 20 m apart from each other, give access to more than 500 m of cave passages. Initially, a walking sized cave passage characterised by gypsum crystals (flowers) and incrustations leads after almost 200 m to a complex and, for some, confusing maze of interconnected stream cave passages, of which some are perennially or seasonally active, but others seems to have been abandoned by flowing water. The cave obviously functions as a seasonal sink and drains allochthonous water towards south or south-east. SITUATION: On the eastern flank of Lum Lawbah and at the base of the northernmost large cliff face (more than 100 m wide, some 25 m high).

EXPLORATION HISTORY: Before 1832 one Mr. Furnell had discovered somewhere near Sohra or Sohrarim an unidentified, relatively large cavern (CRACROFT 1832) with gypsum crystals. This could be Lum Lawbah Cave 5 as it is the only cave in the area, in which I saw gypsum flowers and incrustations already in the entrance area. Additionally, it is the cave closest to the station of Cherra (Sohra) and is comparatively easy to visit and to explore because the first 500 m of cave passages are devoid of obstacles like climbs, deep water or crawlways. 1844: Lieutenant Henry YULE (1844: 616) of the Bengal Engineers mentioned a river vanishing in a cleft beneath a high cliff near Cherra: Lawbah Cave 5 is the only known sink at Sohra that disappears below a noteworthy cliff. 2001.02.04: Harald Kirsamer came across a sink on the eastern foot of Lum Lawbah.2001.03.07: H. Kirsamer and H. D. Gebauer explored and mapped the first 522.6 m / -16.8m.
