Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 23/05/2016

The Chengalpattu Cave is actually a man-made rock-cut chamber used for religious purposes, which was originally intended for a troglodyte Buddhist's hermit cell but later turned into a Hindu 'cave temple' dedicated to Shiva. SITUATION: IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909,10: 269) positions the cave at a distance of »a mile east« (about 1.5 km or +0.5° = 30") of »Chingleput« (note 1).

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 23/05/2016

NOTE 1: Chingleput (also: Chengalpattu, Chengalpat, Chingalpat) at N12°41': E079°59' (Everest 1830, IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909,10: 269) or at N12°42': E079°59' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet ND44-14 Conjeeveram (U502 series, 1956 edition) is indicated as »Chengalpattu« on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 113 G4).
