Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 27/03/2016

Man-made rock-cut chambers used for secular purposes (e.g. –>Andhari) and cave temples used for religious purposes (–>Janardhan Swami's Cave) at –>Daulatabad are excavated from Devagiri (Deogiri, Deoghir, Duwagir), a hill »literally littered with rock-cut caves … [that] are more like open halls and are quite large and spacious. Such large halls without the surrounding small rooms for the viharas, are rarely found in any Buddhist centre. …12-13th century Yadava period« (MATHE & PATHI 1992: 23-25).
