Description
A sacred pool associated with the Pandava brothers and dedicated to Bhim is not only of unidentified size and of an unidentified nature (whirlpool, stilling basin, gour pool) but also has formed in an unspecified kind of rock. SITUATION: In Mayurbhanj on the stream Vaitarani (note 1) and near a village called Booring (note 2), which lies under the Thakurmunda P.S. (note 3) and at travelling distances of about 40 km south-west from Karanjia (note 4) and 162 km north from Cuttack (N20°30': E085°50'). The place can also be approached from Dhenkikote [note 5] (20 km) on S.H. [State Highway] No 11 connecting Keonjhar [note 6] and Panikoili [note 7] (mayurbhanj.nic.in/tour1.htm accessed 2005.12.19). DESCRIPTION: Here river Vaitarani flows through a gorge in steps forming a series of picturesque rapids until it settles down in the pool called Bhimkund. It is encircled by precipitous stone walls (mayurbhanj.nic.in/tour1.htm accessed 2005.12.19). CULTURAL HISTORY - religious folklore: The egend reveals that Bhima, the second Pandava used to take his bath in this pool when the Pandavas were passing their incognito life in Birat Nagar, said to be the present Kaptipada. During Makar Festival in the month of January thousands of people gather here to take their holy dip.
