Description
A group of altogether five man-made, megalithic »rock cells« (LOGAN 1887-1891, 1 plate 7) or »rock-cut caves / cells« (LOGAN 1887-1891, 2: cccliv) and »sepulchral caves« (SHARMA, V D 1961, 1985), which had been excavated from laterite at the »Chällil Kurinyoli paramba« or »Challil Kurinyoli peramba« (note 1), are situated somewhere in the administrative units Padinhattammuri, Padinyattamuri, or Padinnatummuri (note 2) amsam and desam in »Calicut taluk« (note 3). LOGAN (1887-1891) provides description, groundplans and sections. LOGAN (1887-1891, 1 plate VII) gives ground plan and sections. LOGAN (1887-1891, 2: cccliv): »In Padinhattammuri, 6 1/2 miles [10.5 km] north [better: north-east] of Calicut, a number of very interesting rock-cut caves were excavated, from which a quantity of pottery was unearthed. An account of the place with twoplates of engravings was published in [LOGAN 1879] Vol. VIII of the Indian Antiquary. The articles found in the cells were sent to the Madras Museum.« SHARMA, V D (1961 edited 1985) regards »meghalithic time sepulchral caves« (burial chambers).

NOTE 2: »Padinyattamuri« (LOGAN 1871-1891, 1 plate VII) and »Padinhattammuri« (LOGAN 1887-1891, 2: cccliv) is marked Padinnatummuri near N11°18': E075°49' on AMS sheet NC43-03 Calicut (U502 series, 1959 edition). NOTE 3: Calicut N11°15': E075°46' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003), is now the headquarters of Kozhikode district.
