Description
A natural sacred cave or rock shelter or man-made rock temple at »the side of a low rocky hill« at one village of Jala, which lies in an area with numerous cromlechs, is said to be mentioned in the Madras Times of the 7th February 1876 (RIVETT CARNAC 1877, 13-14). SITUATION: At an unspecified location somewhere in the vicinity of a certain village of Jala, which is said to lie 22.5 km (most likely at a travelling distance along roads) in an unspecified direction from Bangalore (note 1): »… The village of Jala is about fourteen miles [22.5 km] from Bangalore situated at the base of a large isolated rocky hill; upon the summit of which is a little grassy dell, stretching out in front of a cave, that has been converted into a small picturesque temple. It is but a small village, the temple is curiously built against the side of a low rocky hill, a cave forming the sanctum. It possesses no architectural beauty, and it is interesting only from the fact that the priest in charge, a wild looking fanatic, apparently about sixty years of age, has never left its precincts, for more than forty years, nor has he allowed the lights in the holy place to go out for that period.«
