34.333300,72.066700
Description
Stone age tools (note 1) or lithic implements discovered Col. D.H. Gordon (note 2) in what Anglo-Indian archaeologists understood to represent a »rock shelter« (note 3). SITUATION: Somewhere in the vicinity of the well-known archaeological site variously called Jamal Garhi (note 4) or Jamalgarhi (note 5), Samal Garhi (note 6), and Jamal Gahri (note 7), a village that lies about 20 km in a direct line approximately north-east of Mardan (34°12'N: 72°02'E). The cave itself is said to lie »100 m east of the Mardan- Katlang road« (DANI, A H 1964: 46) but Katlang (34°22'N: 72°05'E) lies only 5 kmor 6 km along the road NNW from the village of Jamal Garhi (34°19'N: 72°04'E).
NOTE 1: »The tool types … repeat those from period III found in in the Sanghao Cave« (DANI, A H 1964: 46) i.e. the cave –>Par Koh, 3 km east of Sangao village. NOTE 2: GORDON, D H (1938): The microlithic industries of India.- Man (London: Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland), vol. 3, no. 19, page 21. NOTE 3: A true rock shelter (entrance width or height larger than interior extension) or a cave (passage length larger than entrance dimensions, containing a permanenrly dark zone, and large enough to be entered by humans). NOTE 4: Jamal Garhi N34°19': E72°04' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NI3-05 Mardan (U502 series, 1958 edition). members.fortunecity.com/ipahouse1/eng/eng21m/kalei… (accessed 31.07.2004) places the miraculous site »… 400 km feet [sic!] above ground level. According to Sir John Marshal [sic! MARSHALL, John 1951: Taxila …], a famous archaeologist, the circular stupa at Jamal Gahri [sic!] is one of the earliest in Gandhara.« NOTE 5: DANI, A H (1964: 46). NOTE 6: »Some more caves have been known in this area but have not been reported so far. They are … near the Samal Garhi remains« (Krishnaswamy, V D 1946.07.03: Information sought by Brigadier Glennie). NOTE 7: Professor Sankalia (1974) places the »cave at Jamal Gahri [sic!] in Afghanistan« when, in reality, it was the up to ca. 1700 but later in the Sikh Empire, then British, and currently in Pakstan.
