Description
A relatively »large cave« (note 1) is said (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 18: 302) to be situated ob one »Lalpahar« (red hill) at Bharhut village (note 2), near Nagod town (N24°34': E080°36' on Survey of India sheet 63-D/10).
NOTE 1: The nature of the natural or man-made cave, shelter or rock temple is not known. Since this "cave" is listed among the antiquities of Nagod State, it could be a man-made underground but limestone of a superior quality, known commercially as Nagod Limestone, is met with in the form of low hills close to Nagod town but the greater part of the area is covered with fine sandstones of the Bhander series and shales. NOTE 2.: Bharhut: Check IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 8: 88), missing in H.D. Gebauer's copy.
