Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 28/03/2016

Extensive Buddhist »cave temples« (man-made, rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes) have been cut from crystalline Archaen base rock (DUTT 1981:1) occuring »24 miles« (38 km, probably along the road) north of »Ellore town« or Elluru (note 1) at Guntupalli (N17°00': E081°08'): »On the western side of a small ravine running up into a low group of hills are extensive rock-cut Buddhist remains. They consists of a chaitya cave, a circular chamber with a simple façade containing a dagaba [dagoba] cut in the solid rock, and several sets of vihara caves with entrance halls and chambers on each side … The chaitya cave is still resorted to as a place of pilgrimage« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 12: 388). Not seen: BAREAU (1962).

NOTE 1: »Ellore« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 12: 388) near N16°42': E081°06' is indicated as Ellururu on India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 103 F3.
