Description
A man-made coal miners' shaft descends 30 m down to a level floor breached with a »gaping black hole« which accidentally broke another 30 m further down into the Collaboration Canyon of Krem –> Synrang Pamiang. ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for the man-made coal mine shaft which outsiders wanted to call after a group of coal miners' shanties but ended up with interpreting the Khasi phrase "sher la met" as »Cherlamet« (note 1). SITUATION: About 4 km in a direct line approximately southeast from the cave entrance to Synrang –>Pamiang.CAVE DESCRIPTION: »A huge oblong hole, some 15 m wide, 25 m long and about 30 m deep, with a team of miners / quarrymen [drilling shotholes] at the bottom and a gaping black hole -- obviously that seen in the roof of the Synrang Pamiang streamway. I went down the rickety but sound wooden ladders for a look. The river could be heard possibly some 40 m below« (Jarratt 1999.02.03 Mss). »The abseil down the daylight shaft into the huge chamber below was superb and about 33 m to the sloping rubble pile below … At one point Tom almost put his hand on a 9" long [about 23 cm] lizard resting on the wall. … The daylight entrance at Cherlamet Mineshaft was apparently opened up not long before our arrival last year. The existence of the enormous void below was not known of by the miners and luckily no one fell down it. Apparently one of them was lowered down into it for 80 ft on a rope to see that below where they are currently blasting the rock is solid« (Jarratt 2000 Mss).
