An archaeologically discovered but speleologically unexplored group of rock-shelters, some of which contain paintings (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1980-81 / 1983: 70). ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for all these rock shelters, rockshelters, or group of rock-shelters (IAR 1980-81 / 1983: 70) collectively called after the name of the populated place of Manikpur.SITUATION: Unknown or, for that matter, somewhere in Uttar Pradesh, Banda district, Manikpur [note 1] (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1980-81 / 1983: 70). CULTURAL HISTORY -- rock art: Some of those rock shelters contain paintings (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1980-81 / 1983: 70). EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1980 - 1981: P. C. Pant and Sunil Kumar assisted by Ravindra Kmar and Santosh Saran of the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Banaras Hindu University, conducted exploration around Manikpur … Further exploration yielded a group of rock-shelters, some of which contain paintings. Besides, microliths and beads were encountered inside and outside the shelters (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1980-81 / 1983: 70).
