Description
NOTE 1: The north-south draining »Kanai river« (MARAK, J L R 2000: 38) or »Kanai Nala« (BROOKS & SMART 1995) is indicated as »Kairnai River« on AMS sheet NG46-09 Tura (U502 series, 1959 edition) but as the »Karnoi R.« (in the hills) and »Kharnai or Karnoi R.« (in the plains) on Survey of India sheet 78-K/SE (1930 edition), and »Karnoi« on Survey of India sheet 78-K/SE (1926 edition). The seasonal stream drains a basin between N25°10': E90°50' to N25°15': E90°52' and at about halfway between the Rongra in the west and the Mahadeo in the east, and leaves the Garo hills near N25°09'30”: E90°50'45” for the Plains of Bangladesh.
A north-east facing, rectangularly shaped cave entrance (about 2 m wide and 2 m high) leads to solitary, joint guided rift cave passage. The estimated 25 m of horizontal passage decreases in size and tapers south-west. ETYMOLOGY: The Kanai, Kairnai or Rongra is the name of the river (note 1) and the Bengali "nala" (Sanskrit) signifies a river bed (talweg, thalweg) and a valley with a seasonal (monsoonal) stream. BROOKS & SMART (1995: 45) render this dry little item a »Kanai Nala Cave (Kanai River Cave)« as if it were a river cave. SITUATION: Estimated 25 m vertically above the "nala" (seasonal river bed) at the –>Kanai Sink and at the base of a sheer wall of rugged limestone cliffs towering above a steep amphitheatre strewn with fallen boulders above the eastern, jungle-covered river bank near the downstream end of the blind valley where the seasonal waters of the Kanai (Kairnai, Rongra) sink.
