Buddhist caves (man-made rock chambers used for religious purposes) are reported from Kateshwar (note 1), Koteshvar, Koteshwar (note 2), or Kotiswar (note 3) in unspecified connection with a certain Siyot (note 4) on the western border of Kutch, on the bank of the Khori (Kori) branch of the Indus, and close to the Iranian Gulf of the Indian Ocean. CULTURAL HISTORY: The 2nd or 3rd century archaeological findspot yielded two 9th century Buddhist seals. indiaculture.net/talk/messages/65/2539.html?965257… (accessed 2005.10.12), literally quoted: Kateshwar (Siyot): In the 2nd and 3d century A.D. there was existence of Bauddh religion in Kutch which can be seen by the Buddhist caves in the Kateshwar. The Chinese world traveller Hue-en-Sang [i.e. XUANZANG] had noted around five thousand Buddhist caves in this site [note 5] needs more attention. Buddhist objects found from there are kept in the Kutch Museum, Bhuj. There are lots of objects [sic! for: two seals] found from there are kept in he Kutch Museum, Bhuj [note 6]. There are lots of objects found from this site and sorrounded [sic!] area which indicated that the richness of the site. These objects are very precious and collected privately. One of these caves has been examined by the authorities.
