Description
The symbol W for »cave temple« is shown on a Tourist map of Andhra Pradesh (note 1) at Peddireddipalle (N15°04': E079°18' ±5 km). Since this »cave temple« (note 2) represents a sight-seeing spot, which tourists are expected to visit, the "caves" (or so) at Peddireddipalle are suspected to be of historical or religious importance and to consist either of one (or more) natural sacred caves (temple caves) or man-made rock chambers (cave temples) used for religious purposes. SITUATION 1: AMS sheet ND44-01 Kurnool (U502 series, 1956 edition) shows »Peddireddipalle« near N15°04': E079°18' (±5 km) at the eastern foot of the Velikonda Range. SITUATION 2: TOURIST MAP (1973) shows »Peddireddipalle« (without coordinate grid) in the very north of Nellore district and close to the border of Prakasam district, at a travelling distance of 46 km from Udayagiri (N14°52': E079°19') north and 66 km south of a T-junction (without name) at about halfway on the 111 km long road from Cumbum (also: Kambhamu N15°34': E079°07') east to Ongole (N15°30': E080°03'). SITUATION 3: SURVEY of INDIA (1978): Andhra Pradesh (1: 1 mill. Stete Map series) shows no Peddireddipalle (or so) in »Nellore district« near the border to »Ongole district« (now: Prakasam district). SITUATION 4: The India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 109 F3) shows no Peddireddipalle (or so). GEOLOGICAL SITUATION: »Nellore district … The central area is composed of Archaean, well foliated, mixed mica and hornblende schists. To the east of the line drawn from north to south through the middle of these gneisses or schists occur, generally parallel to the foliation, intrusive sheets and lenses of very micaceous pegmatites … On the west and south-west of this central area come gneissoid granite and augite and olivine bearing diabase dikes; and beyond them again, in the same direction, we find the somewhat irregular and shattered edge of the great overlying Cuddapah series of the Purana group of ancient sedimentary unfossiliferous rocks [sandstones, limestones], which stretches away to the west of the District« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 19: 7-8).
