Description
SONAWANE (1982) reported rock art (paintings) from a certain »Tarsang Shelter« of dubious nature (possibly a true cave where human took shelter) which SONAWANE (1983: 31) considers in one single paragraph not only as an »excavated rock shelter« and »intricate hollows« but also —and most puzzling— as »numerous caverns in stacked rocks of a massive hill« (note 1). A relevant photograph (SONAWANE 1983 plate 1 opposite page 198) shows an open air site with disintegrating rounded granite boulders which might or might not obstruct the view of a cave entrance or shelter. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1: The archaeologically excavated site is said to measure 14 x 5 m. SITUATION: On the north-western face of Maheshwari Hill near Tarsang village (N22°06’: E73°28’), which lies 3 km from Mahi river and 30 km north-west of Godhra (note 2) in Panchmahal district, Gujarat state.
NOTE 1: We have heard of rich beggars and learned of unbearable lightness but massive hills of stacked rocks would be mind boggling if there were not heaps of dislocated boulders: »The Maheshvari hill where [the archaeologically] excavated rock shelter is situated, is an outcrop of granites of the Arvalli series. This massive hill gives an appearance of well stacked rocks perching one above the other and weathered in a system that as generated rounded rocks and a series of intricate hollows. In these numerous caverns are revealed the evidence of human activities in the form of various antiquarian remains, belonging to the prehistoric and historic times.« NOTE 2: Godhra N22°45': E73°38' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003), on AMS sheet NF43-06.
