Description
The largest rock shelter (or cave?) in the vicinity of Barach is a huge projecting rock, which is locally is known as Pandvan, overlooks a stream (no name mentioned), and contains paintings (rock art). SITUATION: Near the village of »Barach (Barch)« (note 1) that lies at a travelling distance of »14 km« (GUPTA 1984) due south from Panna (N24°43': E080°12') on a track towards »Gunnor« (GUPTA 1984) or Gonour (note 2). CULTURAL HISTORY - rock art (GUPTA: 201-202): Paintings of various figures in different styles cover the rear walls and the ceiling of the shelter: A red washed unidentified animal, two dark-red outlined neelgai (note 3) filled with checker pattern, a fish in pond with a crane standing beside, a black rider on a black & red elephant and dark red armed warriors on uncaparisoned horses in addition to many small pictures of humped bull, deer and »barasingha« (swamp deer, Cervus duvauceli) in red wash. Near the base of the shelter dancers are drawn in triangular white outlines.
NOTE 1: Barach N24°33': E080°11' on AMS sheet NG44-14 Panna (U502 series, 1959 edition) is shown on a track (not shown on EICHER 2007 map 55 H2) crossing a south-flowing tributary to the Mirhasan Nadi. NOTE 2: No »Gunnor« but a Gonour positioned at N24°29': E080°20' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) and south-southeast of Panna is shown on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 55 H2) and at the edge of a small lake and SSW below a peak »1222 [feet]« (372.5 m asl) on AMS sheet NG44-14 Panna (U502 series, 1959 edition). NOTE 3: The nilgai (neelgai) is an Indian antelope (Boselaphus tragocamelus) »is an inhabitant of open forest more often than grassy plains … [IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 1: 235].«
