Description
Two cave entrances on an almost vertical fault give access to what sportsmen understand to represent a relatively »small cave« (Glennie, E A 1939 Mss). ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for what has been christened Caddell's Cave (Glennie, E A 1939 Mss) and referred to as a »small cave in the Camel's Back« (note 1). SITUATION: In the vicinity of Mussoorie (N30°27': E078°05': 2000 m asl) and »about 50 feet [15 m] below the Camel's Back Road« (note 2). CAVE DESCRIPTION: »Starts through an inconspicuous opening leading down out of the small rock overhang. The cave is a winding passage which has a 2nd entrance about 80 yards [73 m] away and 30 feet [9 m] above the road« (Glennie, E A 1939 Mss). CULTURAL HISTORY -- human use: »The second time I visited this cave a picnic party was on level ground outside, and their surprise was great when in dead silence six of us solemnly filed past and one by one disappeared down the crack into the hillside and never returned« (Glennie, Edward Aubrey (1939 Mss: Preliminery [sic!] report to the British Speleological Association by the Regional Recorder, India and Burma).
NOTE 1: »I have seen many rock shelters there [at Mussoorie]; and Glennie, who lived there for many years, tells me that there is little of interest beyond a small cave in the Camel's Back« (CRAVEN 1969: 28). NOTE 2: »Camel's Back Rd. was built as a promenade and passes a rock formation that looks like a camel -- hence the name« (LONELY PLANET, India 1993: 360; 1997: 387; 2001: 381; 2003: 385; LONELY PLANET, North India 2001: 482). »Camel's Back Rd is a popular 3 km promenade from Kulri Bazaas to Gandhi Chowk, and passes a rock formation that looks like a camel« (LONELY PLANET, India 2005: 408, 2009: 467).
