Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 30/03/2016

An unspecified number of »sepulchral caves« consisting of a man-made, rock-cut pits, which had been excavated from laterite and were used in »meghalithic time [SHARMA, V D 1961 edited 1985]« as burial chambers, reported GOSH (1989, 2: Kannavaram) after an unspecified contribution to »IAR 1960-1« (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1960-1961) from somewhere near a place called »Kannavaram« (note 1) in the Chirakkal taluk (note 2).

NOTE 1: »Kannavaram« is not identified as it is not listed on nima.mil/geonames (accessed 16.11.2003) or in IMPERIAL GAZETTEEER (1907-1909, 25: 283) and the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006 index). NOTE 2: The town of Chirakkal is indicated on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 1101 C1) a few kilometers north of »Kannur (Cannanore)« N11°51': E075°22' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NC43-03 Calicut (U502 series, 1959 edition. »Chirakkal.-- Northernmost taluk of Malabar District, Madras, lying between 11°47' and 12°18' N. and 75°11' and 75°41 E., with an area of 677 square miles. It contains 43 amsams, or parishes … In the north-eastern corner of the taluk two hill tribes are found, the Vettuvars and the Mavilars, who supply the agricultural labour of the country and are practically agrestic slaves. The females of these tribes wear nothing but green leaves, which are changed daily at noon. An attempt at reform in the matter of dress was once made, but to no purpose, as the individuls who tried the experiment of wearing clothes all came to untimely ends. The north-east and east of the taluk are bounded by the great range of the Ghats and the western side by the Indian Ocean. Along the coast the beach is generally low and sandy, but immediately behind it rises the high lateritic formation which is characteristic of this part of Malabar; and the contrast between the red soil which this forms and the many groves and fields which lie in the hollows among it is exceedingly picturesque« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEEER 1907-1909, 10: 288).
