Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 27/03/2016

»Rock shelters« (THAPAR, B K1980a) containing rock art (note 1) ) were seen at a relatively low hill (no name mentioned) »near« (a kilometre or so south of) one village of Dapalle somewhere in Jamalamaguddu taluk. SITUATION: The village of Dapalle (near N14°50': E78°22': 600 ft / 180 m on AMS sheet ND44-05 Cuddahpah, U502 series, 1956 edition) lies above the orographically right (locally south) bank of the Penner River and about 4 km or 5 km WSW of Jamalamaguddu (N14°50': E78°24') town and at a spot a kilometre north of a low hill (no name mentioned: Brahmagiri?) that rises less than 200 feet (61 m) above the adjacent plain. CULTURAL HISTORY - rock art: On the »inner surface of the shelters« are paintings in red ochre representing groups of stylised animals along with human and mystic symbols (THAPAR, B K1980a).
