Description
There is a »deep water-hole supposed to be of unknown depth … [on] … a stream called Sukandar, a tributary of the Kanhar [note 1], on the Sarguja [note 2] boundary« (DRAKE BROCKMANN 1911: District Gazetteer of United Provinces of Agra and Oudh.- Volume 27: Mirzapur.- page 103) CULTURAL HISTORY: »… a deep water-hole supposed to be of unknown depth. In the middle of this is a mound on which grows a kurlu tree. When ghosts become troublesome, the Ojha searches for a piece of deer horn in the jungle: This he hammers with a stone into the tree, and thus shuts oup the ghost. There is another river named the Kurso in Sarguja which is also infested by water ghosts; and to these the Baiga does sacrifice that there may be good rain, productive harvests, and that epidemies may not visit the village.« (DRAKE BROCKMANN 1911: 103).
NOTE 1: The river »Kanhar« (DRAKE BROCKMANN 1911) or »Kunhur« (BALL 1873) is indicated as »Kanhar«on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 57 H3), rises near N24°05': E083°20' (AMS sheet NG44-16 Garwa, 1962 edition) in an area where the States the Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh (ex- Madhya Pradesh) and Jharkand (ex Bihar) meet, flows about northwards and joins at N24°28': E083°08' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NG44-16 Garwa (U502 series, 1962 edition) the left bank of the river Son from the south.
