Description
NOTE 1: »Katem« (Reddy 1984.02.12 Mss) is not identified as no place called Katem (or so) is neither listed on nima.mil/geonames (accessed 16.11.2003) nor in IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 25: 288) or in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006 index). NOTE 2: A 45 km radius (90 km diameter) circle around Anantapur covers the area between N14°15': E77°22' to N15°05': E77°51' (WGS84).
Three cave entrances (2 by 2 m in size) join to a 2 m wide and 2.5 m high chamber continuing into 40 m of narrow rift passage with crawling sized leads branching off (Reddy 1984.02.12 Mss edited by GEBAUER 1988: 108-109). SITUATION (after Reddy 1984.02.12 Mss): The entrance to Katem Cave is »located 30 m above the valley floor on the southern face of a steep hill slope« at an unknown location (note 1) somewhere at a travelling distance of 45 km (note 2) or 28 miles in an unspecified direction from Anantapur (N14°41': E77°36'). CAVE DESCRIPTION (Reddy 1984.02.12 Mss): »It has continuous caving of 52 m with branches of further about 50 to 60 m. At its entrance there are 3 openings of about 2 m diameters joining into a 2 to 2.5 m chamber from where the cave has a narrow passage and branches most of which we have to enter either by sitting or crawling. The rock is granite and the floor of the passage is covered with earth.«
