Description
An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified peculiar characteristics) is said to give access to an unidentified cave (Welling Thabah, Pongtung village headman, 1998.11.01 personal communication) exploited for food. ETYMOLOGY: The word "asar" is not identified (note 1) unless it is a version of the Khasi loan word "ka ashâr" (ex Sanskrit, Bengla, Hindi, etc.) for »a chutney; preserved fruits or vegetables« (SINGH, N 1906: 5). On the other hand, "Khar Masar" and "Masar" are the names of two Khasi clan in the Khyrim State (GURDON 1906: 218). SITUATION: At an unidentified location which lies at an unspecified distance of 3.5 km either in a direct line or along a winding route in an unspecified direction from the village of Pongtung (Phlangpongtung N25°15'08”: E091°57'09”). CULTURAL HISTORY - Human use: Welling Thabah, the Pongtung village headman, pointed out (1998.11.01 personal communication) that frogs had been hunted here (note 2).
NOTE 1: The standard Khasi and Synteng Khasi numeral "ar" is the same as the Lakadong Khasi "a" or the Amwi Khasi "o" and means »two, 2« (SINGH, N 1906: 4; GURDON 1906: 200, 208, 214).The Khasi verb "sâr" means »to sweep« (SINGH, N 1906: 183; BLAH, E 2007: 298; OLDHAM, T 1854 / 1984 appendix C: lxv) while the Khasi / English loan word "ka sâr" (noun) means either »a serge« (ex English) or »a Kashmiri chadar« (SINGH, N 1906: 183), and the noun "ka synsár" is »a broom« (BLAH, E 2007: 37; SINGH, N 1920: 54; GRIERSON 1903, vol. ii; GURDON, P R T 1906: 215). NOTE 2: »The Syntengs and Lynngams are fond of tadpoles, and the Khasis consider a curry made from a kind of green frog, called ka japieh, a bonne bouche. They, however, do not eat ordinary frogs (jakoid)« (GURDON, P R T 1906: 52). The Khasi / Bengali ”ka beng” is »a big frog« (SINGH, N 1906: 11), "ka jakoit" (SINGH, N 1920: 193) or ”ka jakóid” is »a frog« (SINGH, N 1906: 96; GURDON, P R T 1906: 52; BLAH, E 2007: 111) and ”ka japieh” is »a frog of greenish brown colour found in hill streams« (SINGH, N 1906: 99).
