Description
An inspiring, circular cave entrance, which is characterised by »smooth rock surfaces« (possibly indicating granite), about 2 m in diameter, is reputed to give access to the shaft of a pothole leading down into an accessible part of the unknown at considerable depths (Brian D. Kharpran Daly 2002.03.13 personal communication). ETYMOLOGY: The Synteng "myn" is a river and the verb "thong" means »to bet, to offer money« (SINGH, N 1906: 228). SITUATION: Somewhere on Lum Mynthong, a hill that lies at a walking distance of one or five kilometres along a road off to »the left« (approximate north) just when reaching Mawrynkneng / Mawlyngkneng (note 1). LEGENDARY HYDROLOGY: An orange (botanically: Citrus reticulate) thrown down was found to have reappeared in the Sung river (key word: water tracing).
NOTE 1: »Mawrynkneng« N25°32'30”: E92°04' (AMS sheet NG46-10 Shillong, U502 series, 1959 edition), indicated as »Mawlyngkneng« on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 46 A3), is the popular tea break station about halfway between Shillong (N25°35': E92°00') and Jowai (N25°27': E92°12').
