A relatively large and, at least to a certain extent, inhabitable cave in the rock near at hand where nobody less than the Ranee of Saree … lodged on the 1st of July 1815 (FRASER 1820: 366). ETYMOLOGY: Ranee (FRASER 1820) or Rani (Hindi, Pahari etc.) is the title of a -queen- (female chief) and Saree [note 1] a small lordship now totally merged in the Bischur [note 2] territory (FRASER 1820). SITUATION 1815: Not only near at hand from a level spot on the Pabur [note 3], opposite to Raeengudh (FRASER 1820: 366) or Raeengurh (note 4) and at a travelling distance of seven miles (FRASER 1820: 457) downstream along the Pabur (Pabar) river below Roroo or Pooroo (note 5) but also short of a point where the banks of the river, which above were considerably asunder, now closed in, confining its stream in a deep rough gully, between two lofty abrupt mountains (FRASER 1820: 387) and hence in the vicinity (±2.5 km) of N31°07'30”: E077°45' (WGS84). SITUATION 1828: HAMILTON (1828, 2: 439) misplces Raeengurh … on the banks of the Pabar river … lat. 31° 12' N., lon. 77°46' E. and thus at the position of Roroo (FRASER 1820: 366), Poroo (FRASER 1820: 457) or Rohru (India Road Atlas, Eicher Goodearth 2006: 6 B4) near N31°13': E077°45' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). GEOLOGY: From Seel to Deolara, the residence of the Ranee of Torbut, the route runs up the valley watered by the stream which joins the Pubbar river, opposite to Raeengurh. In all this line, mica slate is the only rock occurring in sita. The dip was observed to be N. W., inclination 15° (HERBERT, J D 1842: lviii-lix).A relatively large and, at least to a certain extent, inhabitable cave in the rock near at hand where nobody less than the Ranee of Saree … lodged on the 1st of July 1815 (FRASER 1820: 366). Histoire

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1815.07.01: On the 1st of July, James Bailie Fraser (1783 June 11 -- 1856 January, the 15th Laird of Reelig in the county of Inverness) and his brother Mr. William Fraser (then Political Agent for the army of Major-General Martindale), … received [1815 July 1] a visit from the Ranee of Saree [note 6], a small lordship now totally merged in the Bischur territory. She had but small means for travelling comfortably, and lodged in a large cave in the rock near at hand, where she was attended with sufficient respect by those who yet remained attached to her (FRASER, J B 1820: 366).
