Description
An unidentified but reputedly seasonal »pool of water« (Kalang Pdang, Lumshnong, 1997.03.01 personal communication) or, perhaps, a seasonal (monsoonal) spring of water. ETYMOLOGY: Unknown. What had been recorded in 1997 by foreigners simply as "Umtyllu" (Kalang Pdang 1997.03.01) is suspected to represent rather a variant of the Khasi word "ka tyllong" for a source of water (note 1) than "u tyllong", »a handle, a stock« (note 2) or "ka tyllong um", a wellspring (note 3). SITUATION: Unknown. Somewhere north-north-east of Lumshnong (25°10'45”N: 092°22'25”E) and west of one or the other unspecified Umsynrem area. IDENTITY: Compare not only Krem –>Umkhlot (±500 m 25°11'27”N: 92°22'30”E) and Krem –>Umkwu (±200 m 25°11'15”N: 92°22'10”E) but also the unidentified Krem –>Umsynrem, Lumshnong (Passah 1997) near (±2 km) 25°10'42”N: 92°22'23”E (representational approximation).
NOTE 1: ka tyllong (Khasi; noun, feminine), abbreviated ”ka tlong” (SINGH, N 1906: 239) the »source (of a stream)« (SINGH, N 1906: 239). NOTE 2: u tyllong (Khasi; noun, masculine), abbreviated ”u tlong” (SINGH, N 1906: 239), not only the »handle (of a knife)« (SINGH, N 1906: 239) but also »a stock (of maize, etc.)« (SINGH, N 1906: 239) or a supply / quantity of stupefying caving liquids (beer, rum, whisky), explosives, survey books, pencils, and the like. NOTE 3: ka tyllong um (Khasi; noun), a »wellspring« (SINGH, N 1920: 589), poetic / literary: »an original and bountiful source of something (): sadness is the wellspring of creativity« (Oxford Dictionary 2005).
