Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

Unidentified caves (no names mentioned) or, more likely, fastnesses (note 1) are said to have been used as refuges during the Khasi insurrection in April and May of the year 1829 when Captain Lister, commanding the Sylhet Light Infantry, with a mere handful of men, drove these Cossyahs from post to post, stormed their entrechements, penetrated into their caves and fastnesses … (PEMBERTON, R B 1835 reprinted 1966, 1979, 1991, 2000: 225) or Captain Lister, commanding the Sylhet Light Infantry, with a mere handful of men, drove these Cossyas from post to post, stormed their intrechements, penetrated into their caves and fastnesses … (MACKENZIE, A 1884 edited 1995: 223). These caves may be the same as those noted by the historian LAHIRI (1954 edited 1994: 102): Captain Lister moved northward in search of Tirot Singh who moved from cave to cave and from fastness to fastness, always eluding the search of the British (note 2). Some of these unspecified -caves- could be those associated with he freedom fighter and national Khasi hero Tirot Singh (Krem –>Tirot, Mairang; Krem –>Tirot, Niangdai) and his mates (e.g. the so-called Laitlyngkot Caves or Krem –>Manick, Laitkroh). Other subterranean hide-outs in the wilderness were used in later times (note 3).he freedom fighter and national Khasi hero Tirot Singh (Krem –>Tirot, Mairang; Krem –>Tirot, Niangdai) and his mates (e.g. the so-called Laitlyngkot Caves or Krem –>Manick, Laitkroh).
