GUPTA GANGA, Bhadrawah
32.983300,75.716700
Description
A sacred spring and temple cave associated with the Pandava bothers of Mahabharata fame, who, according to legend, arrived at this place from »Kashmir« (i.e. the town of Srinagar N34°05': E74°49') by taking a subterranean interstate route via the fabulous tunnel »Gupt Ganga« (Secret / Hidden River). SITUATION: About 500 m east of the Vasuki temple in Bhadrawah / Bhadarwah proper (note 1) and within the precincts of the Gupt Ganga mandir (Hidden / Secret River Temple) at the foot of Ashapti, a mountain (circa 2750 m asl) rising above the Niru Valley (GANHAR, s.a. = circa 1973: 79-80, illustration 19). THAKUR (1992: 211 fig. 5.21 geological map after SHARMA, VERMA & SHARMA 1979) places Bhaderwah on (or near) an island of Panjal Trap (note 2) surrounded by Bhadarwah Slate (note 3).
NOTE 1: Bhadarwah, Bhaderwah, Bhadrawah (N32°59': E75°43' nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NI43-15 and in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 2 C5). NOTE 2: The massive, amygdaloidal and pophyritic Panjal Traps are a series of altered andesitic to basaltic lava flows with a total thickness of estimated 1500-2000 m. Intercalation of Gondwana plant beds and marine carbonates as well as quartzites occur within the traps. The Panjal Trap volcanic activity commenced at the end of Uralian and continued till Upper Triassic (THAKUR 1992: 208). NOTE 3: »Bhadarwah Slate« (THAKUR 1992: 211 fig. 5.21) seems to correspond to the »Middle to Upper Devonian Muth Quartzites« of THAKUR (1992: 209 table 5.8 Liddar Valley) or to the »Lower Devonian to Upper Silurian Muth Quartzite (quartzite, slate)« of THAKUR (1992: 210 table 5.9 Kishtwar - Marbal Pass). It is when we come to THAKUR (1992: 215 table 5.11 Bhadarwah - Balesh) that the Bhadarwah Slate consists of »slate, garnet phyllite, chlorite phyllite with Precambrian quartzite band.«
