Description
The western one of the two potholes, which had been collectively called Umkyrpong Shaft 1&2 Brooks 2010 788 m are both indicated with symbols for [descended] cave (Arbenz, T 2010.03.31 cave distribution map: Pala_Ridge_4-10.pdf) but neither mentioned by name a) in Anonymous et al. (2010.03.29 Mss: Diary (current) 2010.doc) b) nor in Brooks, Simon J et al (2010.03.29 Mss: Survey summary.xls) c) or in Arbenz, T (2010.04.18 Mss: Pala Positions.xls) ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous (note 1), indigenous (note 2) or locally known cave name has been identified for this pothole, which, though located in what has been otherwise referred to as a certain Khang Masi Area (falling on the map quadrangle 83-C/11.405 Longkindong: Khang Masi), was christened Umkyrpong Shaft (note 3) inspite of having nothing to do with the village of Umkyrpong on the outskirts of which immigrant cavers were allowed to camp for a short time in February 2010. Thus, the made-up cave name Umkyrpong Shaft is short for Pothole nticed during our stay on the outskirts of Umkyrpong village SITUATION: Arbenz, T (2010.03.31 cave distribution map: Pala_Ridge_4-10.pdf) indicates next to Umkyrpong Shaft 1&2 the number 1 near N25°26‘30.7”: E092°35‘30.8” (WGS84) at a spot which lies at linear distances of about a) 2 km due north from the village of Kseh (St. Joseph church near 25°25’24.0”N: 92°35’32.9”E: circa 880 m) b) 1.5 km ENE from the village of Umkyrpong (25°26'04”N: 92°34'48”E) c) 260 m west of the number 2 near N25°26‘30.4”: E092°35‘40.0” (WGS84) d) 255 m north (250 m N, -53 m E) from Shaft 110 or –>AA Cave (Galloway 2010) 110 e) 100 m SSW (-96 m N, -31 m E) from a nameless, circular doline (about 35 m in diameter) near N25°26‘33.8”: E092°35‘31.9” (WGS84).The western one of the two potholes, which had been collectively called Umkyrpong Shaft 1&2 Brooks 2010 788 m are both indicated with symbols for [descended] cave (Arbenz, T 2010.03.31 cave distribution map: Pala_Ridge_4-10.pdf) but neither mentioned by name a) in Anonymous et al.
