Description
The sacred cave (Hindu temple cave) in the laterite at –>Ingleshwar was said to give access to a fabulous tunnel, which is reputed to communicate with »another similar cavern on the hill of Nageswar also said to be of laterite« (NEWBOLD, T J 1844b: 1003) or, if you prefer, »with another cavern at Nagarhal« (NEWBOLD, T J 1846f: 234). ETYMOLOGY: "Nageshwar" (Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, etc.), Lord of the "nag" (mythical serpents), more often than not responsible for springs, pools, and ponds of water and, in cases, represented by the "nag champa" or "jamba" (Marathi), the »iron-wood tree« (Xylia xylocarpa (Roxburg) Taub., synonyms: Mimosa xylocarpa Roxburg, Xylia dolabriformis Benth.). SITUATION: From Ingleshwar (note 1) »about three coss [note 2] to the south-west« (NEWBOLD, T J 1844b: 1003) and »on the hill of Nageswar« (NEWBOLD, T J 1844b: 1003) or »at Nagarhal« (NEWBOLD, T J 1846f: 234). Neither »Nageswar« (NEWBOLD, T J 1844b: 1003) or Nageshwar nor »Nagarhal« (NEWBOLD, T J 1846f: 234) as such (note 3) is indicated on AMS sheet NE43-15 Bijapur (U502 series, 1960 edition) anywhere »south-west« (NEWBOLD, T J 1844b: 1003).
