Description
Unspecified caves or rock shelters situated somewhere above the left (eastern) bank of the river Swat used Philip Wright (note 1), one M.W. Emanuel (note 2) and a certain Weatherhead (note 3) during six or seven weeks in July and August 1938 when excavating Greco-Buddhist sculptures from ruined monasteries. SITUATION: Within a few miles of Barikot [note 4], which is about 20 miles of the valley [of the Swat river] … It was only the more inaccessible sites that really gave us a rich collection of sculpture. Consequently, we found ourselves camping in caves about 4000 or 5000 feet [1219.2 or 1524.0 m asl] up or spending three or four hours a day wading across the river to sites on the less-frequented farther [west, orographically right] bank (BARGER, E 1939).Unspecified caves or rock shelters situated somewhere above the left (eastern) bank of the river Swat used Philip Wright (note 1), one M.W.
